After completing the dental degree in 1997 at the University of Malta, Nikolai proceeded with further specialisation in the field of Prosthodontics at the University of Toronto and obtained a Master degree in 2001 and doctorate in 2004.
 
The discipline of Prosthodontics catalysed the clinically- based research interests in the area. The research activities focused on oral health and the rehabilitation of the edentulous patient with particular emphasis on the cost effectiveness of clinical treatment. He has lectured internationally on the topic and in 2006, and was awarded the Astra Tech Scientific Award in recognition of research in the field of Tissue Integrated Prostheses.
 
On the academic front he is Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery and Head of the Department of Oral Rehabilitation and Community Care. Current research activities include the investigation of novel ways of improving current treatment methodologies and the establishment of an oral health profile of the Maltese population. The latter research has initiated two major projects, the Mobile Dental Unit and the St. Vincent De Paul Geriatric Teaching Clinic. Both projects have increased the exposure of the University of Malta in the Maltese community.
 
Nikolia loves cooking traditional Maltese dishes and is an avid gardener.
