Teeth whitening: done professionally, buy an over-the-counter kit or buy online?
27 September 2018

Everybody loves a bright white smile, and there are a variety of products and procedures available to help you improve the look of yours. Many people are satisfied with the sparkle they get from brushing twice daily with a fluoride-containing toothpaste, cleaning between their teeth once a day (flossing) and the regular cleanings at your dentist’s office.

If you decide you would like to go beyond this to make your smile look brighter, you should investigate all of your options with your local dentist.

How safe and effective are teeth whitening products sold in shops and online? It is often not clear exactly what these products contain so it’s very hard to know if they are safe to use, or even if they are effective. Many products bought online do not clearly state their active ingredients and often contain ingredients that are banned in the European Union (EU) on safety grounds.

Why is it important to investigate all of your teeth whitening options, specifically with your dentist? A dentist will check the condition of a person’s teeth prior to any whitening treatment whatsoever. Dentists will look for tooth decay, gum disease, mouth cancer and other issues before even considering a teeth whitening plan. Carrying out any teeth whitening procedures on top of any of these issues could cause pain or infection amongst other dangerous complications.

What about non-dentists who carry out teeth whitening treatments? Non-dentists might be allowed to use teeth whitening materials legally, however, it should be clear that the level of knowledge of a non-dentist is not appropriate for examining someone’s mouth to say it is safe for them to have teeth whitening treatments in the first place. In the worst case scenario, being non-dentists, they could miss an opportunity to diagnose something that is life threatening, such as mouth cancer.

Further to this in 2012 a law was passed in the EU stating that teeth whitening can only be carried out by a dentist for the patient`s first treatment and under a dentist`s supervision for the rest of the treatment duration.
